Each week we are going to release one new teaching and learning strategy specific to the transportation industry. These lessons will include estimated time, materials, and instructional procedures for classroom (F2F) and online teaching.

9/6 Luma Learning Lesson #2: Cyber Security

Objectives

  • Brainstorm the risks with cyber security.
  • Research and recognize the risks of cyber security.
  • Share specific concerns with cyber security.
  • Identify specific strategies to implement to help with cyber security.

60 minutes

Materials

Instructional Procedures for F2F
1. EfficiencyPass out the Cyber Security Worksheet.
2. AuthenticityEfficiencyEngagementHave participants brainstorm what they currently know about cyber security and have them write down any personal examples.
3. AuthenticityEfficiencyEngagementHave participants brainstorm what they want to know about cyber security.
4. Discuss as a large group what they shared.
5. Split participants into small groups.
6. EngagementEfficiencyPass out the Cyber Security Cards. Tell participants they are going on a treasure hunt.
7. EngagementOptional: Individuals with filled out cards and worksheets that have accurate strategies can earn prizes (hats, gum, t-shirts, certificates, etc). Make it fun!
8. EfficiencyOn one side is an example risk with cyber security. The backside provides prompting questions.
9. AuthenticityOn the blank cards, have the participants write an example of a risk that is personally meaningful to them at your company or one that they want to learn more about.
10. EngagementAuthenticityCome back together as a large group and discuss what they learned. You can bring in an expert from your company to go over what they should do or what are strategies to implement that help with cyber security risks. You can also bring in an outside expert through a webinar to discuss or use online training material to review strategies such as Luma’s Cyber Security eNugget®.
11. AuthenticityAfter the discussion have the participants write down strategies that will help them combat cyber security threats/risks. They can also fill in the last column of the Cyber Security Worksheet including what they learned.
12. EngagementOptional: If you set the activity up as a game, have fun with it as you pass out the prizes.

Instructional Procedures for Online
1.   Post the following questions and directions in an online discussion board within your LMS like our eNuggets®. Today we are going to discuss cyber security. Answer the following questions.

AuthenticityEfficiencyEngagement• What do you know about cyber security?  
• What do you want to know about cyber security?
• Read and respond to at least 2 of your peers’ responses that make you go Hmm..oh no!..or oh yeah!.
2. EngagementEfficiencyIn a second discussion board, post the Cyber Security Cards. Tell participants they are going on a treasure hunt.
3. EngagementOptional: Individuals that complete the worksheets by the deadline can earn prizes (hats, gum, t-shirts, certificates, etc). Make it fun!
4. EfficiencyOn one side is an example risk with cyber security. The backside provides prompting questions.
5. AuthenticityOn the blank cards, have the participants write an example of a risk that is personally meaningful to them at your company or one that they want to learn more about.
6. EfficiencyHave them read the eNugget posted by Luma on cyber security or they can do online research to find the answers.
7. EfficiencyThey will post their worksheet answers to the discussion board and share 1 lesson learned.
8. You can bring in an expert from your company to go over what they should do or what are strategies to implement that help with cyber security risks. You can also bring in an outside expert through a webinar to discuss or use online training material to review strategies such as Luma’s Cyber Security eNugget®. If you do not want to do a webinar or do not have the technology, you have the option to post a new discussion board where they share for the next month strategies. Here is text you can use; 

AuthenticityNow that we have looked at the risks, post specific strategies you feel we should use at our company to combat the risks. What will you use in your own life? Share at least 2 examples.
9. EngagementOptional: If you set the activity up as a game, you can use an online leaderboard like in the eNugget® platform to award points for posting in the discussion board. Most LMS systems will auto send notifications to the users. You can mail the rewards or have them (if they are local) come pick up their prizes.
