Luma Connections #1: Create Divergent Questions

Collaboration and connection are important for our social-emotional well-being. Importantly, Luma has conducted research and published the benefits for creating learning communities remotely. This year, Luma will provide specific strategies you can implement to connect learners remotely. We are calling these strategies our Luma Connections.

Teaching Strategy: Socratic Dialogue

Teaching Tool: Discussion Board
Nugget the MascotThis is an online tool that allows learners to interact with each other to explore a topic and to discuss key concepts and concerts, share experiences, interact with each other, and to ask questions. Interactions are not in real-time and can be mentor-learner and learner-to-learner.

Topic*: Rail Crossing Safety *You can replicate this tip for any content topic.

Questions must be thought provoking and lead to additional questions and thoughts.

Tip: Embed divergent questions in an asynchronous discussion board. A divergent question is one that can not be answered by a YES or No. They are thought provoking and can lead to additional questions.

Why are there so many deaths related to railroad crossings? [Make required]

Answer at least 2 additional questions or come up with your own question that your peers can answer.

  1. Why is this question important?
  2. Can you give us an example?
  3. What caused you to feel that way?
  4. What is an additional question we need to consider on this topic?
