Luma Connections #12: Teaching Respect in a Safe Environment

Collaboration and connection are important for our social-emotional well-being. Importantly, Luma has conducted research and published the benefits for creating learning communities remotely. This year, Luma will provide specific strategies you can implement to connect learners remotely. We are calling these strategies our Luma Connections.

Teaching Tool: Discussion Board
Nugget the MascotThis is an online tool that allows learners to interact with each other to explore a topic and to discuss key concepts and concerts, share experiences, interact with each other, and to ask questions. Interactions are not in real-time and can be mentor-learner and learner-to-learner.

Tip:
Creating respect Word Clouds in groups.

In discussion groups provide the opportunity for groups to work together to create a visual of how respect looks, feels, and sounds. Invite groups to fill in their word clouds with words and share them in newsletters, in terminals or buildings, and even in your social media sites.

Fill in the Word Cloud describing what respect looks like, sounds like, and feels like. We will pick the best ones to showcase.

Some ideas for answers:

  • Looks like: opening the door, letting someone turn in front of you, eating healthy, picking up your trash, helping carry something
  • Sounds like: “Thank you”, using kind words, “Please”, “No, thank you”, using a kind voice
  • Feels like: community, friendly, warm, helpful
