Luma Connections #8: Fun Spaces

Collaboration and connection are important for our social-emotional well-being. Importantly, Luma has conducted research and published the benefits for creating learning communities remotely. This year, Luma will provide specific strategies you can implement to connect learners remotely. We are calling these strategies our Luma Connections.

Teaching Tool: Discussion Board
Nugget the MascotThis is an online tool that allows learners to interact with each other to explore a topic and to discuss key concepts and concerts, share experiences, interact with each other, and to ask questions. Interactions are not in real-time and can be mentor-learner and learner-to-learner.

Tip:
Create discussion board spaces where learners can connect and have fun.

Truck Stop or Road Closures
Have a non-academic space where learners can share for a purpose. Set up a Truck Stop discussion board where drivers can post their favorite stops and the locations of the stops. Maybe you open up a Road Closure board where drivers can post different alerts for their peers. If they follow a discussion board, they can get real-time edits with new posts.

Example 1: Truck Stop

This board’s purpose is to post tips for the road.

  • Where is your favorite place to stop for rest breaks? Why?
  • What was the best part of your day?
Example 2: Road Closure

Did you plan ahead today or maybe you found a road closed unexpectedly because of an accident. Share any alerts to this discussion board.
