Objectives

  • Use a map to calculate mileage.
  • Describe important information on a map using a map legend.
  • Use a compass rose to describe position and movement on a map.
  • Identify locations on a map using latitude and longitude.

Materials

Instructional Procedures for F2F
1. EfficiencyOptional: Arrange the room in pairs or pods.
2. AuthenticityAsk the class how many own a paper map. If anyone has, have them discuss the benefits of having and being able to use a paper map as a driver.
3. EfficiencyTell the participants that research shows that 1 out of 3 people can not read a paper map. Ask them why they think this is. After this discussion, do a step-by-step walk through of the different components of a map:

table of contents
index
legend (review the different points on the legend)
maps and coordinates
calculating mileage
mile markers
4. AuthenticityEngagementPass out the Scavenger Hunt. Feel free to add additional questions or change the questions to fit with your company’s travel area.
5. Give participants time to look at the paper map and complete the scavenger hunt.
6. EngagementOptional: You can add an incentive that any group that scores a perfect score gets a free road atlas for their vehicles.
7. Review the answers to the worksheet.
8. Discuss what they think the advantages and disadvantages are of a paper map.

Instructional Procedures for Online
1.   AuthenticityPost an online poll to see how many of your drivers own a paper map.
2. EfficiencyAssign Luma’s How to Read a Paper Map eNugget® or similar online materials that walk through the important aspects of a map.
3. EfficiencyHave them complete online map questions that assess how well they can read a map.
